The Other Side

Jonners An interesting trip into more psychedelic territory, but still some strong song writing throughout, if a bit formulaic at times. Love the speech / monologue in Bring on the Rain, and the airy atmosphere in a lot of tracks. Favorite track: Bring On the Rain.

It’s what you didn’t say, you old prick No one’s perfect I wish they were I need them to be But they aren’t And you're the last one The last of the ball-busting blowhards The first one to know and the first one to blow I hope it won't die That love in your eye Yes, that love in your eye Barfly On the other side It's that the world spins on, my friend No one asked for this I need to know I never will And I'm the last one The last of the willowy sheep-wolves The first one to sigh and the first one to lie I hope you all cry When I pass to the other side I'm bankin' on wine and guitars Up there in the stars Red wine and guitars Up there in the stars It's why we lick boot, money-boss No one loves you For you We wish you only pain And live for the day And you're the last one The last of the dick-swinging dead-eyed The first one to smile and the first one to kill I hope you're perturbed As we split your jaw against the curb I'm talkin' bout a godless way to die On the other side A truly godless way to die On the other side

Deep in the loins of the night The strangest holes bleed out weak light They could feel a sad eye peeking in Through the brambles the glow of a pin In the forest A world unto its own Why the shaking Of these roots On this day Hard-break waves on a rock-filled shore The darkest rolls of a foamy swell We could black out the pain like a pill So the grays feel like color again Salty mist Coats my tongue Why the holding Onto this For so long Here atop the cold metal spire The wind couldn't scream much higher You could end the suffering some way Be finally floating today Smoke-filled lungs Ancient puffs Why the dreaming Of your end At this height

Blue Hearts 01:23
Paint portrait for Ray Go through that Tupperware finally Build something to hold All of these things that would be better off sold Purple stars in the sky It’s the absence that will make you cry Two hours on the road Two more before we gotta go Sing songs to a room Spent half my life playin’ for ghosts and ghouls Green waves in the field Feels like my heart is gonna peel outta here Will you tell the truth For once, for once I’d like to hear it from you Nobody will know But to be frank, I think it already shows Blue hearts on the phone Are you romantic or are you just alone

Oh, My Love 03:17
My Rapunzel Let down your hair for me I must be seen with thee This can be easy Oh, the thunder Stretch out your hands to me Your ham hock hands to me They crack so easily We take turns holding our breath Till there’s nothing left Oh, my love My Brida Open your arms to me Let me be kind to thee This can be breezy Oh, the fire Strike out your flames at me Your embers shower me They look so pretty We take turns flying the broom All around the room Oh, my love My Valentina Eyes made of satin dress No need to pass the test No need to please me Oh, the willows They rock so violently A swaying but silent tree Dreaming so sweetly We take turns stealing the scene But it’s never mean Oh, my love

I'll sing the songs You'll live my life Way out in the mountains Where I long to be One day I’ll get there Dine below the stars Eat what I’ve killed Blood-red wine Give my love to the moon Harbor no grudge For ones on the road For tickets out-sold ‘Cause I'm half old And I won't be known Build an outhouse commode And die in the growth Of a gnarled forest In a mossy orifice My body will lay They’ll eat me away It'll be the last show I’ll play Last record to date On the mountain’s grand stage Nothing left to believe Nothing left to concede Just my heart on the breeze A faint song at your knees And you'll live my life And I’ll say these things Like “All those men Writing songs of all their dreaming”* I told my mind “you’re dreaming” He buried me today It feels as if the curtain The curtain has been drawn The moon was far away Yet it touched me cheek to cheek I watched my heart abandon Abandon me today We rose up to a ridge Twilight swept our eyes Cleared cobwebs from the mind Growing slowly over time Since the child in us died But now I’m laughing with the sky All forever in the sky All forever in the sky * Quote is from “Come into the Water” by Mitski

Diamond Fawn 05:02
Quiet dawn Light from a thriving sun Hot little pricks of love Warming the hardest ones Rolling bay Blues churning into gray Thick in the choppy waves Holding the oldest beings Somber sky So stern on the snowy high Up here on this mountain’s side Keeping warm this heart of mine Oh… Prying eye Whites of a milky kind Sheen of the wildest life Watching the world go by Desert lies Thorns of a burning kind Form blisters on any mind But we're keeping the magic alive Diamond fawn Spots down to the cloven paw I swim in your star-filled eyes You are the gentlest kind

about

The Other Side was recorded from May to October 2020. Mike Clauss played bass on every track, and Dylan Ryan played drums on every track except for Diamond Fawn. Stephen Heath played slide guitar on Change From the Rust. Paul Bergmann played everything else, and wrote all of the music and lyrics. Most of it was recorded on a TEAC a2340sx tape recorder. The album was recorded primarily in an attic in Kingston NY, as well as in New Haven CT, New London CT, and Los Angeles CA. Paul Bergmann mixed and mastered the album. Special thanks to Jasia Bergmann (Paul's mother) for illustrating the front cover entirely from her own imagination.

about

Paul Bergmann New Haven, Connecticut

In his relentless oeuvre-building, Paul has amassed an especially articulate kind of existentialism: what it means to persist, and to create, in a world which dies in the near distance. In No Masters in Paradise, the form of the songwriter’s ballad, in the hands of an expert, is turned inward for comfort, resisting the base lure of worldly approval. ... more
